Frequently Asked Questions
- Is this program really no-cost for homeowners?
Yes. If your home is eligible, you pay nothing. The entire cost of the solar panels, battery system, and installation is funded by state infrastructure funds and federal energy grants. This initiative is backed by programs like California’s Self-Generation Incentive Program (SGIP) and others, so eligible homeowners can strengthen the grid at no personal expense. - What happens if I sell my house after the system is installed?
The solar + battery system is a permanent improvement to your property. If you sell your home, the system (and all its energy savings) will transfer to the new owner. This is often a selling point: a home with its own power source and lower bills is more attractive to buyers, potentially increasing your home’s resale value.
- Will I still receive an electric bill from my utility?
You will still remain connected to the grid, but your monthly bill will be much lower. In most cases, participants only pay the minimum connection fee required by the utility. Your solar panels will supply all of your electricity needs. If your system ever produces more electricity than you consume, you’ll earn credits on your account under state net metering policies. Essentially, your utility bill could drop to nearly $0, and you might even earn credits during some months.
- How does my battery help the public grid?
Your battery storage isn’t just for your home’s benefit – it also helps the community. During times of extreme energy demand (for example, a heat wave afternoon when air conditioners are on full blast), your battery can discharge to power your home independently. This reduces strain on the statewide grid and helps prevent blackouts for everyone. In fact, California has a program that rewards homeowners for using their batteries to support the grid during critical events (To learn more about the Demand Side Grid Support program, visit https://www.energy.ca.gov/programs-and-topics/programs/demand-side-grid-support-program).
- What are my responsibilities for maintenance or repairs?
Very little. These modern solar PV and battery systems are designed to run with minimal maintenance. There are no moving parts in solar panels, and the batteries are self-contained. All equipment comes with manufacturer warranties (typically 10–25 years for panels and 10+ years for batteries). Our program also provides a workmanship guarantee on the installation. If anything needs service, it’s handled by the program at no cost to you. You simply enjoy the benefits.
- Why was my home selected for this program?
Our selection process is data-driven and community-focused. We work with state energy analysts to score areas based on factors like local grid vulnerability, wildfire risk, and electricity usage patterns. Your home is located in an area that scored in the top tier for needing grid support – meaning upgrades at your address can significantly improve reliability for the surrounding region. We also verify practical details (such as having a suitable roof and safe electrical system) before extending a formal invitation. This isn’t a random offer; your property met specific criteria among many in your community (To learn more about how California identifies high fire-threat and high-priority zones, visit https://osfm.fire.ca.gov/fhsz/)
